FAQs

Common questions on Circumcision

FAQs

  • Q. What is circumcision?

    A. Circumcision is the process of cutting the foreskin covering the head of the penis. This is carried out on male babies, teenagers as well as adults. The reasons behind this practice are medical reasons, religious beliefs, or just personal preferences and cosmetics grounds.

If you still have questions regarding this, contact us. We provide adult, teenager and newborn circumcision services in Brisbane and Maryborough in QLD, Kempsey, near Port Macquarie and Sydney in NSW.

  • Q. Why should I get circumcised?

    A. The circumcision process is associated with various health benefits as well as individual beliefs. Now we are not discussing the religious beliefs here. This is being practised for thousands of years due to this reason.

The most common indications for circumcisions are phimosis (non-retractable foreskin), balanitis, balanoposthitis, recurrent urinary tract infections. Phimosis could also result from long standing diabetes in adult patient.

The health/medical reasons include – circumcision helps lowering risks of various infections and diseases. Not only this, but some of the males also choose to get circumcised for cosmetic or aesthetic purposes or just personal preferences.

  • Q. What is phimosis?

    A. Phimosis is defined as the inability to retract the foreskin (prepuce) covering the head (glans) of the penis. Phimosis may appear as a tight ring or “rubber band” of foreskin around the tip of the penis which prevents the full retraction for foreskin. Phimosis is divided into two forms: physiologic and pathologic.

Physiologic phimosis: Children are born with tight foreskin at birth and separation occurs naturally over time. Phimosis is normal for the uncircumcised infant/child and usually resolves around 5-7 years of age, however the child may be older.

Pathologic phimosis: Phimosis that occurs due to scarring, infection or inflammation. Forceful foreskin retraction can lead to bleeding, scarring, and psychological trauma for the child and parent. If there is ballooning of the foreskin during urination, difficulty with urination, or infection, then treatment may be warranted.

  • Q. Is ZCR circumcision painful?

    A. Every method has some levels of pain. No complete painless method is invented until now until the procedure is done under general anaesthesia. This procedure is done under local anaesthetics (nerve block) and once the anaesthetics starts to work you will almost no pain.

Patients are adviced to take nurofen and/or panadol 1 hour before the surgery to minimise the pain.

Also, there could be some pain and discomfort on day 1 and day 2 after surgery.  So continue to use nurofen/panadol regularly.  Ice application and adequate rest will improve the pain.

  • Q. Does it cause any damage to the penis?

    A. It does not damage the penis or any part of it. The device completely protects the head of the penis during the procedure, so there is no chance of head of the penis getting injured and damaged. The complications after the circumcision can be easily prevented by following the medical instructions. Most of the men do not face any significant issues. There could be swelling initially but it gradually settles down. A reduced sensation or tenderness is occasionally observed. None of these indicates any serious health issue.

  • Q. What are the pros of circumcision?

    A.

    • Circumcision has shown to have protective effect against UTI.
    •  It can prevent prepuce (foreskin) issues like infection and inflammation causing phimosis.
    • Protective against rare condition of Penile Cancer.
    • Lowers the risk of HIV, possibly some other STIs.
  • Q. What are the cons of circumcision?

    A. Along with the pros, there are a few cons too. Even though the significance of these cons is not that big, it is our moral duty to let you know everything before you choose to proceed to circumcision.

Some of the potential harm or risks include.

    • Pain due to the operation (even though the procedure is done under local anaesthetics)
    • Bleeding
    • Infection
    • In some cases, psychological harm for the child
  • Q. What are the side effects/complications?

    A. With any surgical procedure, there is some percentage of complications and risks. ZSR circumcision is also not 100 % complication-free. The risk/complication are very low with ZSR Circumcision- but infection, intra operative and post operative bleeding could happen. Sometimes the silicone ring does not get attached with the staples in one section, in which case the doctor must put some absorbable stitches in.

Complications from ZSR circumcision are very low.

  • Q. How much does ZSR circumcision cost?

    A. Contact us on the mobile phone or send an inquiry to get the basic idea of the approximate cost for this procedure.

The price includes initial consultation, procedure, and routine post-surgery follow-ups.

You will be in direct touch with the doctor via the phone/messages. After your operation, you may need to send the pictures so the doctor can assess the wound and see how the healing is going. This will ensure that the circumcision healing process is going well, and any early complications can be identified in time.

  • Q. How much time will it take in recovery?

    A. The recovery or the healing post-surgery part is very crucial. The ring starts to come off between 2-3 weeks.

Newborns take nearly a week to 10 days to recover; on the other hand, adult males take 3-4 weeks to recover completely although we usually tell patients it could take 4-5 weeks for full recovery. Overall, the recovery period is significantly lower compared to the conventional or traditional methods of circumcision.

There are a few other factors that play a very important role in the healing process. It is mainly infections after the surgery. The ZSR circumcision process ensures optimum safety to prevent any such complications. This is the reason; the recovery period becomes very rapid and comfortable at the same time.

  • Q. Is there any prohibition on sexual activity?

    A. Yes, there are certain restrictions for various physical activities such as weightlifting or swimming. This list also includes sexual activities. Doctors usually instruct 4-5 weeks of the prohibition on any type of sexual activity.

The best way to recover fast and continuing every activity is to properly follow the prescribed instructions and maintaining hygiene.
